10 Best Sakura Viewing Spots Around Tokyo

What is Hanami?

If you visit Japan in spring, you feel so wonderful to see everywhere is pretty in pink. It’s the season of Sakura bloom and has sakura festival for 2-3 weeks -from the end of March to April normally.

Hanami -Sakura viewing is the Japanese culture of enjoying the transient beauty of sakura bloom. Many Japanese people likes to do it during daytime or night time. Especially sakura is much beautiful and has mysterious mood with lights in night time, it’s unlike the daytime one and be called Yozakura. However, sometimes good sakura viewing points are pretty far from sightseeing and shopping area.

Yoyogi Park is the one of most popular and largest park for sakura viewing in Tokyo. So it is easy to get there from Omotesando and Harajuku. You can take a rest and also be amazed by sakura viewing at same time when you are shopping at Harajuku area. Of course you can walk from Shibuya area to there too. Enjoy this limited Sakura blooming season nearby coolest shopping area!

#2. Chidorigafuchi Park

Chidorigafuchi Park is northwest side of a moat around Imperial Parace at Chiyoda. There are many people to enjoy Yozakura every year. You can hire a rowboat for 30 minutes / 800 yen also. Especially a boathouse is closed 8pm in a cherry blossom season. (Normally closed 4:30~5:30pm)

Odawara Castle Park is beside Odawara castle, and listed in the “100 best spots for sakura in Japan” and “100 best historical park” by the government officially. There has 320 Yoshino cherry blossoms, also mystic beautiful view with Japanese paper lanterns in night time. It’s about 1~2hours from Shinjuku Station to Odawara Station by a train.

Ueno Park

Ueno Park has about 800 Yoshino cherry blossoms and Oriental cherry blossoms. There are also Tokyo National Museum, National Museum of Western Art, Ueno Zoo, International Library also in this park. Therefore easy to enjoy Hnami and more things with family.

Inokashira Park

Inokashira Park is just 5 minutes from Kichijoji station by walk. There’s good location and one of famous park in Tokyo. Yoshino cherry, Weeping cherry, double-flowered cherry, all 500 cherry blossom trees are here, it’s amazing view what many sakura petal is falling down to big pond as like a snow. Also there has a rowboat and a swan boat for rent. Let’s take a boat for sakura viewing on the water.

Meguro River is about 7.8km length and passes through from Setagaya then Meguro to Shinagawa ward. There has 800 Yoshino cherry blossoms between Ikejiri Ohashi to Meguro station. It can take 70 minutes Hanami cruise ship from Tennozu Yamatsu Pier (5 minutes from Tennozu Isle Station) in daytime, however it’s reservation required.

Akagi Cherry Blossom Festival is one of big Hanami festival around Tokyo. (About 2~3hours from Shinjuku station) There has about 1000 cherry blossom trees along the street for over 2km, include 60 years old Yoshino cherry. Trees are planted on both sides of the road, so you can feel like a dream when walk through a tunnel of cherry blossoms.

Rikugien Garden is a Tokyo metropolitan park, be built in 1702 for culture improvement by a retainer of Tokugawa. There is a classical Japanese beautiful garden.

Sumida Park is located between Azuma Bridge and Sakura Bridge at Asakusa where hold a pretty big sakura festival around early April every year. About 1000 cherry blossom trees are on both sides of Sumida River, and can take a Japanese houseboat from Ryogoku bridge pier. Azuma bridge is so close from Asakusa Sensoji Temple also, so let’s walk around to feel a Japanese culture!
