Animate is Japan’s largest and most famous store selling anime merchandise. The main store, which is located in Ikebukuro, Tokyo, is nine stories high. Each floor is filled with manga, CDs, DVDs, and other anime merchandise. The store is known not only for having a large variety of anime merchandise, but also for having anime exhibitions, talk shows and autograph events of popular voice actors. A nine story building filled entirely with anime merchandise products may sound like heaven, but can be quite complicated to look for what you want exactly. For those who want to go to animate Japan but are not quite sure what they have and where you can get them, here is a list of things you can get and where you can get them at animate Ikebukuro.


Manga: 2nd-4th floor

At animate Ikebukuro (main store) there are three floors just for manga. Each floor carries different types of manga. For example, the 2nd and 3rd floor mainly carries manga targeted mainly to male readers, whereas the 4th floor carries manga targeted mainly to female readers.

The manga that are now in trend or will soon be made into anime are all on the 2nd floor, so if you want to take a look at the manga that are popular in Japan now, the 2nd floor will be where you will find what you’re looking for.

Animate Ikebukuro also carries drawing materials which will come in handy if you write manga yourself. If you want to try drawing with materials the professionals use, they be sure to visit the 4th floor.

For those who are interested in buying trading cards, key chains, towels, stationary goods, etc, the 5th and 6th floor is the place you want to go. The floor is divided into several sections, depending on what kind of manga or anime character is printed on the product. Animate often has campaigns where you can get free anime merchandise depending on how much you spend at the store. If you have any anime that you like in particular, checking if they’re having any campaigns might be a good idea.

Animate also carries a large variety of CDs, DVDs, and games. They have CDs of songs that were used in anime programs, CDs of songs that are sung by voice actors and other CDs that are related to anime. Their variation of DVDs is also very large, starting with DVDs of anime that have already been broadcasted to DVDs of events performed by famous voice actors.

Being Japan’s No.1 anime merchandise store, it may be too obvious that they have a large stock of games, but yes, animate Ikebukuro is known to have all sorts of games. They have adventure games for Play Station Portables, Play Station VITAs, etc. If you have any CD or DVD that has anything to do with anime, or a particular game that you want, animate Japan will be the place you’ll find it.

Among the nine stories of animate Ikebukuro, the top two, the 8th and the 9th floor, are usually reserved for anime exhibitions or events performed by voice actors. The exhibitions change once in a while, so please check their website (Japanese) if you’re curious about what is going on.

Also, please note that the events or talk shows performed by voice actors usually need special tickets, so if you want to participate, please make sure that you buy the tickets or products that are necessary for entering the event area.
