Moss phlox is called “Shibazakura” in Japanese that means that “grass cherry blossoms” because it is like a little cherry blossoms blooming on the ground. Shibazakura has variety of colors including light pink, red, light purple and white.
Higashimokoto Shibazakura Park is the best famous viewing spot for Shibazakura in Hokkaido. They have Shibazakura in 100,000 square-meter site. The color of most of Shibazakura planted in Higashimokoto is light pink.
The view from the observatory on the top of the hill is so magnificent and you will feel like you’re on the pink sea. Best season to visit Higashimokoto to see the beautiful scenery of Shibazakura during the season from the middle of May to the beginning of June, although, the season may be changed due to the weather of each year. A festival is held during the best season. They have events and street stalls during the festival.
If you really want to enjoy the view from morning till night, you will be able to stay at furnished bungalow that is for 7-8 people with accommodation fee of 4,500 yen or camp with 300 yen per adult and 150 yen per child. They also have RV park that costs 1,500 yen per automobile.
The path and stairs of the park is paved with pieces of woods so that visitors can reduce fatigue and walk easily. The park including the observatory is barrier-free and conscious of all people who visit the park. In addition, touring car is available with 300 yen fare for round trip from the bottom to the middle of the hill. If you are not confident to walk around the park, you can take the touring car to look around and take pictures of the flowers from the car. On the top of the hill they have a pavilion to take a rest. You can taste local products of Higashimokoto such as sausage and pink colored Shibazakura soft ice cream in the pavilion and stores.
There are some entertainments in the park, too. You can ride go-cart and drive the path going through the pink field. There is a fishing pond and you can fish rainbow trout as many as you like for an hour with the fee of 1,500 yen per adult and 1,000 per child. If you get tired of viewing and playing the park, you can relax with foot-bath. Why don’t you visit Higashimokoto to enjoy the view and tasty foods?
