In Kyoto many Machiya (traditional merchant's houses) were renovated to cafes and you can have a lunch or sweets there. This article introduces you interesting Machiya cafes for a lunch in Kyoto.

In Kyoto there are many Machiya cafes which were used as traditional merchant’s houses. Even if they were renovated for cafe programs, you can feel and enjoy the old elegant atmosphere. I would like to show you 5 kinds of Machiya cafes which are suitable for having a lunch during your traveling in Kyoto.

#1. Awomb

If you want to eat Sushi, you should visit Awomb. The most popular lunch menu is “Teori-Sushi (1450 yen)” and you can make your special sushi by yourself. There are various kinds of sushi ingredients. What ingredients you use for your sushi depends on you. The presentation of dish is also notable.

The building was built around 80 years ago and used by a merchant. The beautiful Japanese garden inside is also the reason why I recommend this restaurant.

#2. OKU

OKU was opened as a Japanese style bar by the ole Japanese style hotel called “Miyamasou”. This restaurant serves Kyoto style home cooking “Obanzai”. Obanzai uses many kinds of ingredients from Kyoto and very healthy in the point of using lots of vegetables. The lunch menu served in this restaurant is only one “Oku-no-obanzai”. But you must be surprised at various tasty dishes. At night you can also use as a bar. Wound you enjoy Obanzai with Japanese rice wine “Sake”?

At Matsutomiyakotobuki, you can enjoy an obanzai (Kyoto style home cooking) buffet at 1300yen on weekdays and at 1600yen on weekends. The number of obanzai dishes are 20 on weekdays and 25 on weekends.

Honke Owariya was originally opened as a sweet shop in 1946, and the Soba “buckwheat noodle” restaurant was started in 1700. In the past, the restaurant presented the Soba to the emperor.

The popular menu here is “Hourai Soba”. You can enjoy Soba with five different tastes. In the restaurant you also must feel the old atmosphere.

#5. Toriiwarou

Toriiwarou was first opened as a chicken restaurant at Gion and moved to the current place in 1945. The restaurant is in the renovated old Machiya, and from the windows you can see the garden.The popular lunch menu is Oyakodon (a bowl of rice with chicken and eggs). You can taste well-cooked chicken with soft-boiled eggs. Oyakodon is available only during lunch time.
