Don’t Miss the Seasonal Big Events of Hakodate!

There are interesting festivals in Hakodate which is one of famous sightseeing spots of Hokkaido. Followings are Hakodate’s popular and representative festival of each season!

Sakura Matsuri – Spring

Hakodate Spring

“Sakura Matsuri” means Cherry blossom festival in Japanese. Cherry blossom viewing is major seasonal event in Japan. People gather with some foods and drinks, eat, drink and sometimes sing while viewing cherry blossoms. A lot of street stalls of light snacks open during the cherry blossom season. Popular cherry blossom viewing spots are Hakodate Park and Goryokaku Park in Hakodate and they usually hold festival from the end of April to the beginning of May while cherry blossoms bloom in full.

Hakodate Spring

Those parks are beautifully illuminated at night during the period, so you can enjoy viewing cherry blossom from morning till night. Hakodate Park is located in the foot of Mt. Hakodate which is famous for the best night view in the world. Many Hakodate residents and tourists come to the park to see about 420 cherry blossoms bloom. Another major cherry blossom viewing spots in Hakodate is Goryokaku Park located in the center of Hakodate. Goryokaku Park has about 1,600 cherry blossom trees along the star-shaped outworks of the fort.

Minato Matsuri – Summer

Hakodate Summer

Minato Matsuri which is the biggest festival in Hakodate is annually held from August 1st to 5th. On the 1st day of the festival, August 1st, the fireworks are set off from the island in front of the Red Brick Warehouses are symbolic buildings in bay area. The fireworks with music and light are fascinating show. In addition, the concerts and street stalls will make you more excited.

Hakodate Summer

People dance along streets of western area on August 2nd and Goryokaku area, the center of the city, on August 3rd. The dance mainly danced in the festival is “squid dance” as squid is the symbol fish of the city. You can enjoy the dance by not only watching, but also taking part in the dance. The squid dance is really simple, so you can easily dance and join the dancers.

Hakodate Momi-G Fiesta – Autumn

Hakodate Autumn

“Momi-G” comes from Momiji (紅葉) which means maple leaves is held at Kosetsuen usually from October to November when the leaves change their colors to red and yellow. Kosetsuen is a huge garden established by wealthy merchant in Hakodate in 1890’s where 150 different kinds of trees are planted.
In the Momi-G Fiesta, the maple leaves festival is the event to enjoy beautiful leaves at historical garden with music concerts and some events. The garden is illuminated in the last decade of October so you will be impressed by the mysterious view of the park even at night until 9:00 PM.

Christmas Fantasy – Winter

Hakodate Winter

Hakodate has an agreement to be a sister city with Halifax City, Canada. Halifax send a big Christmas tree every year. Hakodate City decorates the tree with pretty ornaments and illuminations and set it on the sea in front of the Red Brick Warehouses. Christmas tree decorating period is the festival named Christmas Fantasy. The fireworks setting off into the clear winter sky and Christmas song concerts make the Christmas Fantasy more romantic.

Hakodate Winter

During the period of Christmas Fantasy from December 1st to 25th, some soup shops open to make your cold body warm. You can taste Hokkaido’s representative soups including soup curry, seafood soup, ramen noodles and others.
