5 Most Recommended Aquariums in Hokkaido by Local Residents

Aquarium is a popular spot where men and women of all ages can enjoy. Quiet and dreamy space make you relax. There are some nice aquariums in Hokkaido you should visit.

#1. Otaru Aquarium

Otaru Aquarium is the oldest aquarium in Hokkaido opened in 1959 that has been loved by Hokkaido residents for long time. The aquarium consists of main aquarium building, dolphin stadium and marine animal park.

There are some shows including exciting and dolphin show, laughable penguin show (because penguins hardly follow what trainer says and behave as they want) and dynamic sea lion show to entertain visitors.

Otaru Aquarium has amusement park next to main aquarium building, so you can fully play all day long.

#2. Noboribetsu Marine Park Nixe –

First of all, the building of Noboribetsu Marine Park Nixe is castle modeled after the castle actually exists in Denmark. Not only exterior of the aquarium, but also inside is surprising. After various colorful fish in the huge water tank named Crystal Tower welcome you, Aqua Tunnel will take you to the world of underwater while learning about fish.

Jellyfish Water Tank, which is the biggest jellyfish water tank in Hokkaido, and Galaxy Water Tank that display fish with light and music are also awesome. As well as shows of dolphins and sea lions, penguins’ parade is the most remarkable.

To visit Noboribetsu Marine Park Nixe, it is recommended to buy discount bus ticket of express bus from Sapporo station towards Muroran that takes about 100 minutes.

#3. Sunpiazza Aquarium

Sunpiazza Aquarium is the easiest accessible aquarium in Hokkaido as it is located in Shin Sapporo subway station and just 1-minute from JR Shin Sapporo Station on foot. Sunpiazza Aquarium is 2-story building that has fish and marine animals. You can see various fish living in from the north of Japan to the south on the 1st floor and cute marine animals on 2nd floor.

Aonyx cinereus is quite popular because of their humorous and adorable behavior. You can shake hands with them. You can drop by the convenient aquarium on the way from sightseeing spots to your hotel.

#4. Yama no Aquarium

Yama no Aquarium means “aquarium in mountain” in Japanese, it mainly displays freshwater fish lives in rivers and lakes in mountain of Hokkaido.

The most significant spot at the aquarium is the water tank of about 40 “Ito”, the biggest freshwater fish which is over 1m, swim. Water Tank Frozen in winter is the only one in the world that you can see how fish live in each season. Moreover, the first Water Basin Tank in Japan is magnificent that will make you feel like diving in waterfall basin.

Noshappu Aquarium is the northernmost aquarium of Japan which mainly has fish living in cold sea current.

Of course, you can see clione that is called as “angel of sea” will attract you with its elegant and mysterious figure. You can enjoy not only watching fish and sea animals, but also experience many things such as feeding. It is really good to observe the activities of creatures in water. It also has aqua touch pool of sea urchins, starfish, sea cucumbers, crabs, etc. that you would hardly have a chance to touch.
