You might have heard of this train before. Twilight Express (Japanese: トワイライトエクスプレス) is one of the most famous luxury trains in Japan and started running in July, 1989. This train has a retro look on the outside and the inside is gorgeous.

This trains has everything from its own rich history to its luxurious atmosphere. The inside is just as gorgeous as you can imagine, the dining area will surely wow you. It is breathtaking, you might even wonder to yourself if you are on a train or in a wedding ceremony hall. Not only its interior, but also their meals are amazing. They will serve breakfast, lunch and dinner. They will offer you all kinds of food including fresh seafood, french, tempura, and more. This is not like fast food quality, this is more akin to a high-end restaurant quality.

Although this train was loved for a long time, they stopped running last spring. But, don’t you worry! The new version of this train, Twilight Express Mizukaze is coming up in spring 2017.

Tohoku Emotion has been run by East Japan Railway Company since October, 2013. The purpose of this train is the revival of Tohoku from the earthquake.

What makes this train unique is every seat on this train is a dining seat. Simply put, this is almost like a mobile restaurant. Seats are set in blue and gives you a fresh and elegant impression. They have 3 types of train cars, compartment type (private room), live kitchen space, and open dining. Each car has its own interior modified and decorated in Tohoku’s traditional fine arts. The interior is not only the best part of this train, their meals are another great thing.

The chef uses fresh food from Tohoku and creates an original menu. Chefs changes twice a year and the menu changes every 3 months. So no matter which season or how many times you use this train, you are guaranteed to have their original and seasonal meals that won’t tire you out. It is absolutely amazing that you can enjoy their delicious food while also enjoying a great view of Tohoku. Beware that you cannot use this train by yourself since this is requires a group reservation. You need at least two people in your party to use this train and need the advance reservation.

SL Ginga (Japanese: SL銀河) started running quite recently in June, 2014. This train’s purpose is again the revival of Tohoku. There are a couple of reasons that make this train luxurious and so special. First is its appearance. It is a SL steam train, this type of train hardly runs in Japan. It looks retro and gives you a nostalgic feeling.

Each car has its own theme. The first car’s symbol is Scorpio and this car has a special entertainment that I will cover later on. The second car’s symbol is Sagittarius and has a gallery depicting Night on the Galactic Railroad. The symbol of the third car is Aquila and this car offers another gallery from Kenji Miyazawa. Then the symbol of fourth car is Cygnus and has a open space with a kiosk.

Not only is the outside special, the inside interior is gorgeous as well. The inside is themed in Taisho and Showa era and has gas lamps, stained glass like lighting, Nambu Ironware like shelf and more. The other great thing about this train is that this offers a planetarium in its first car. Having a difficult time entertaining your child? – You will have no such problem on this train. This train will surely entertain not only you but your children and family as well.

Are you a fan of the onsen as well as trains? Your dream train is available here in Japan! Toreiyu Tsubasa (Japanese: とれいゆつばさ) features a foot bath. This train gives you an image of traditional Japan and modern Japan. This train has a special design allowing passengers to enjoy a foot bath. There are Katarai no Ma, Yuagari lounge, bar counter, and Ashiyu.

In the Katarai no Ma, you can enjoy chatting with your friends and family. This area uses tatami seats and gives a Japanese modern impression. Yuagari lounge is a open area with tatami seats, tables, and a bar counter. You can come here after the foot bath and meet people while enjoying the view. It is always nice to get to meet new people during your trip. This train offers you a space to meet new people and share this unique train experience. If you are shy, you can come here with your friends and family and enjoy the different areas of the train. Next is the bar counter, you can come here and try out Yamagata’s local alcohol or fresh fruit juice.

The next is possibly the best part of this train, Ashiyu (foot bath). You need to have a another ticket to use this facility and can only use it for only 15 minutes. The foot bath is red and creates a great contrast with the black wall. Also the wood in this area creates a relaxing atmosphere so you can get away from your daily life and unwind.

This train started in October, 2013 and is operated by the Kyushu Railway Company. Their concept is the journey where you can find an begin a new chapter of your life.

Personally, I think this train is one of the most luxurious trains in Japan. You cannot imagine how beautifully designed this train is. There is a lounge car called Blue Moon. During the daytime, this car is an open space where anyone can come and rest and in the evening, this car turns into a bar. You can interact with other passengers here while having a drink or enjoying the live piano music. You can also enjoy the panoramic view of stars.

Another car is called Jupiter and it is a dining car. Kyushu has a lot of great food and you can enjoy the local cuisine here. Each car is designed and decorated with extra care to the details and offers you a true luxury experience. Guest rooms are another amazing part of this train. All the 14 guest rooms on this train are suite rooms. Its design theme is combination of Japanese and Western and new and old. Every room has its own bathroom, toilet, and air conditioning.
