On September 17th of this year, Studio Ghibli will release a new movie “The Red Turtle”. This is Studio Ghibli’s first film released after Hayao Miyazaki’s retirement.

The Red Turtle is directed by Michael Dudok de Wit, a Dutch animator based in London, UK and co-produced with a French film production. So this is Studio Ghibli’s first film of cooperating with an overseas company. Surprisingly there’s no dialogue on this film in spite of the film’s length.

The director is famous for one animated short film called “Father and Daughter” (2000) which won the Academy Award of Best Animated Short film. The film engaged the heart and mind of Studio Ghibli’s producer, Toshio Suzuki and this became a starting point for the new film “The Red Turtle”.
