Visit Takachiho For The Most Breathtaking Natural Scenery!

Do you know Takachiho town? Takachiho is known as one of the famous spiritual places in Japan. It is located in the northernmost part of the Miyazaki Prefecture in Kyushu.

Do you know Takachiho town? Takachiho is known as one of the famous spiritual places in Japan. It is located in the northernmost part of the Miyazaki Prefecture in Kyushu. There are several sightseeing spots such as shrines, a gorge, hills etc. Here’s 5 things you should do in Takachiho.

 

#1. Take a boat ride in the Takachiho Gorge!

If you come to Takachiho, you cannot miss “The Takachiho Gorge”, the most famous sight in Takachiho. This V-shaped gorge was formed from the Aso lava by erosion of the Gokase river.

The 80-100m high cliff ranges east to west for 7km, and it was designated as a National Scenic and Natural monument in 1934. In the Gorge, there is “Manai-falls” which is chosen as one of the Japan’s Top 100 Waterfalls.

It’s recommended to rent a boat in the Takachiho Gorge to enjoy the beautiful scenery as much as possible. You can get close to Manai-falls as well.

#2. Walk around the special cedar at Takachiho Shrine

Takachiho shrine was built more than 1200 years ago. The Main Hall and a pair of iron guardian dog statues in the shrine are designated as Important National Cultural Properties.

In the precinct, there are two giant trees with their trunks fused together. They look like a husband and wife, so they became famous with a nickname “Couple cedar.” It is said that if you go around couple cedar three times with your marriage partner, lover or friend holding hands, your three wishes, “matchmaking”,” the safety of the family” and “the prosperity of descendants” will come true.

On the 22nd and 23rd of November, “Takachiho Yokagura” is held in the precinct every year. “Yo means night and “Kagura” is a kind of Shinto theatrical dance. This Takachiho Yokagura is designated as Important Intangible Folk Culture Properties.

For tourists, a shortened version of Takachiho Yoyagura called “Takachiho Yagura” is performed every night from 8:00pm in the precinct. It lasts about 1 hour and you can watch four kinds of dances for only 700 yen. The reception starts every night at 7:00pm in the shrine and they don’t accept reservations.

#3. Visit Amano Iwato Shrine, the stage of Japanese mythology

Amano Iwato Shrine

Amano Iwato shrine is famous for the myth of Japanese gods, Amano Iwato and Amaterasu. There are two shinto shrines for each of them, the east hall and the west hall, standing in the precinct. According to the Kojiki and Nihon Shoki, Japan’s oldest chronicles, Amaterasu hid herself in the “holy rock cave (Amano Iwato)” which is close to the shrine. There is a strong relationship between Amano Iwato Shrine and Japanese mythology.

There is also “Amanoyasu-gawara,” the beautiful shores of a river, 500m from the west hall. This Amanoyasu-gawara is said to the place where the myriads of gods got together and talked about how they can let Amaterasu out when she hid herself in the holy rock cave. It is said that if you pile up pebbles and make a wish in the cave, your wish will come true.

#4. See the beautiful sea of clouds at Kunimigaoka

Kunimigaoka

Kunimigaoka is the mountain rising 513m above sea level. It is famous as the place where we can see the sea of clouds. The viewpoint was given a one-star rating in the Michelin Green Guide to Japan.

The best time to view the sea of clouds is autumn, especially on a little humid day in fine weather and windless time. One can seldom see the perfect sea of clouds (it appears only a few times a year), but even without the sea of clouds, you can enjoy beautiful panoramic views from the hill.

#5. Be relaxed at Takachiho Onsen

If you want to take a rest or experience onsen around this area, stop by the Takachiho Onsen. You can enjoy the big public bath of the hot spring, dry sauna and the seasonal bath for less than 500 yen. The natural power will heal your body and mind.
