The main section of the aquarium will be the gigantic aquarium which has a capacity of 7500m³. This is one the largest aquariums in the world, and the sensation it brings to you as you stand in front of it cannot be described in words. There, a group of 8.5m-long whale sharks will be enjoying their everyday swimming session together with over 700 kinds of beautiful sea creatures in Okinawa.

You would probably spend a good hour watching this breathtaking view, but make sure that you stay for the feeding time for the whale sharks that is held twice a day. The massive creature opens up its mouth to swallow the food is purely the moment to see and you cannot dare to blink for a second.

Of course, Churaumi Aquarium is not just about the whale sharks within the glass panel measuring 8.2 by 22.5 meters (although it will make you gasp) or the amount of fish they hold. You should not miss one of the biggest attractions throughout the day, the dolphin show.

The pool was even refurbished to be much deeper to make it possible for the dolphins to jump higher from the surface of water. It lasts for 40 minutes, but the excitement makes you forget the concept of time!

“The Black Stream Exploration” is probably not the busiest section of the aquarium but is highly recommended for its unusual experience of observing the individual aquariums from the above. It is open only for a certain period of a day but you can go whenever during the time and whichever the aquarium you are interested in. If you would like to have the tour by the staff, however, it may be better to book a slot. One thing which is so obvious but we still like to mention is that you should be careful with your belongings and hold them tight with you. When it’s gone, it will be gone, and one of the aquarium is even called “A house of dangerous sharks. If you fall, you will be gone.”

There is a screening section where you can learn the history of Okinawa ocean and how the local Okinawa people have been involved in the sea. While you can get so much information about the beautiful sea that Okinawa people have lived with, when the video is not shown, the screen will be stored and an aquarium appears from the back instead. It is a secret spot you can come in to sit to watch the fish peacefully when it gets crowded in other sections.

If you like abyssal fishes, the Deep-Sea section would be the one for you. Deep down the ocean where the light would not reach, there is a completely different world of sea creatures that amaze you. Some of the abyssal fishes are sadly the rare species in today’s environment. It would be a good opportunity to rethink about our ecosystem through your visit.

It is a very spacy aquarium, and you would want to have a rest times to times. The perfect place to do so is the Café Ocean Blue. This café is facing the massive aquarium and the fish will be swimming just above your head and besides your cheeks. Some people are coming just to sit here and relax while having their favorite coffees and teas.

To maximize your experience, we would recommend you to plan your trip well and start your day early to become one of the first customers of a day. The aquarium will take 2 hours’ drive if you are traveling from the Okinawa’s capital city Naha. Because of this reason, however, there are not so many people during the morning. If this does not suit your schedule, try to go after 4pm when the crowd starts to making their ways to home.
