It is known that Sapporo Dome is the home ground of Hokkaido’s local professional baseball team, Hokkaido Nippon-Ham Fighters and professional soccer team, Hokkaido Consadole Sapporo. As well as the use for sports games, it is used as venues for concerts. The dome can accomodate over 40,000 people even though it depends on what event is held there.
Observation of Ground Shift
As mentioned above, Sapporo Dome is used as the home grounds of both baseball and soccer team. The dome takes hovering system, which is world-first move method, to shift grass ground for soccer to artificial lawn for baseball and vice versa. Movable walls and seats open right and left, the soccer field stage made of grass ground usually set open arena outside is hovered by air pressure and moved in the dome. It takes about 10 hours from baseball ground to soccer field and 15 hours from soccer field to baseball ground. You can watch this amazing system if you join the dome tour and come to the dome right time.
Sapporo Dome is the only dome that has a observation platform in Japan. The observation platform is 53m high. You can see whole view of the arena and overlook the magnificent scenery of Sapporo City, Mt. Teine and Mt. Yubari. The opening hours of the observation platform is from 10:00 AM to 6:00 PM and the entrance fee is 500 yen per adult and 300 yen per elementary or junior high school student. Good value ticket that includes the entrance fee to observation platform and Dorm Tour costs 1,200 yen per adult and 650 yen per elementary or junior high school student.

Kid’s park is located on the 3rd floor of the Sapporo Dome. There are athletic playground equipment that children love in accordance with the themes of sports and fantasy. The space is limited for children from 3 years old to the 4th graders. There is a space for under 2 years old babies, too. The Kid’s Park opens not only the day of sports game, but also the day without any event. Opening hours is from 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM and you can let your children play without charge.
There is a space called memorial corner near the western gate on the 1st floor. You can learn the history of Sapporo Dome since it opened in June 2001. You can find team flags, pictures, goods with signatures of players of Hokkaido Nippon-Ham Fighters and Hokkaido Consadole Sapporo, handprints and posters with the signature of singers who held concert. You may be able to find items associated with your favorite players or singers. This space usually opens from 7:00 AM to 11:00 PM and admission fee is free.
At Sapporo Dome, you can taste Hokkaido’s cuisines including lamb barbecue Genghis Khan, seafood bowl, ramen noodles, ice-cream made of fresh milk of Hokkaido and other delicious foods only available at Sapporo Dome. Without walking long distance, you can go various food stores in Sapporo Dome. On the day of baseball or soccer games, special dishes related teams and players are sold. They are worth to try.
Now you understand how Sapporo Dome is attractive to all people, although it is not famous as a sightseeing spot. If you get a chance to visit Sapporo, you’d better come to Sapporo Dome!
