Family Friendly Things To Do at Onuma Quasi-National Park in Hokkaido

Onuma Quasi-National Park is surrounded by rich nature such as Onuma Lake and Mt. Komagatake. Many tourists visit Onuma to see the beautiful landscapes and enjoy the comfortable weather.

Onuma National Park

Onuma Quasi-National Park is located on the Oshima Peninsula to the southwest of Hokkaido. The park is about 90.83 km2 and it surrounds the volcanic Hokkaido Komagatake, the Onuma, and Konuma. Onuma and Konuma were created by mudflows from Hokkaido Komagatake erupting. The ponds have some water shields and they are enclosed by birch and maple trees.


Summer Activities at Onuma National Park

In the summer time, many tourists enjoy cycling around the 14 kilometer road around the lake. It is about a 70 minute bike ride, but it never feels that long because there is so much to see along the way. You can rent a bicycle at Friendly Bear near Onuma Koen Park. There are other shops around the lake.

Cruise on the Lake

Enjoy a lake cruise in a motor boat and there is hand/foot rowing boat. See water birds up close.

Winter Events at Onuma Quasi-National Park

Onuma Snow & Ice Festival

The Festival of Snow and Ice is a popular event in Onuma. The festival started in 1965 and it is one the big events in south Hokkaido. This seasonal event is held on the first Saturday and Sunday of February every year.

Jumbo Slide

About 50 types of sculptures made of from snow and ice are lined up every year. Some sculptures are illuminated at night. The most popular spot at the festival is the huge slide made of ice blocks cut out from Onuma Lake. The slide is about 20 meters long and kids love it!

Food and Activities

You can also enjoy tasty warm food such as ramen noodles made with soup from agricultural products and BBQ on the snow. There are stands to buy local cuisine and souvenirs near the park. Onuma beef with locally brewed beer is a great combination and soft ice cream made with milk from Yamakawa Ranch is a must try dessert.

Horse Drawn Carriage

The horse slowly walks along the road for about 900 meter long. The sound of the horse walking is relaxing and the ride will be over before you know it. The price varies based on the course and the place you choose. In addition, it is interesting that they provide a pick-up service using a horse drawn carriage, the horse Dosanko was born and raised in Hokkaido.
