Visit 10 of the many character cafes in Tokyo. Sanrio, Studio Ghibli, and the Gundam cafe is probably the most popular. Have a meal while surrounded by your favorite character!

#1. Cafe de Miki with Hello Kitty

Hello Kitty was created in 1974 by Sanrio, she is supposedly a white Japanese Bobtail cat and she always wears a red bow. Legend says that Hello Kitty is from London, the cafe is decorated with a British theme.

This cafe serves pancakes, ice cream, sandwiches, and drinks. There is a drawing of Hello Kitty on every hot drink. The gift shop has all kinds of Hello Kitty souvenirs.

#2. Pom Pom Purin Cafe

Pom Pom Purin is an adorable golden retriever wearing a brown beret and he loves cream caramel pudding. This character was introduced by Sanrio is 1996. The cafe serves savory and sweet food plus drinks. There are Pom Pom Purin souvenirs that can be purchased at the gift shop.

#3. My Melody Dream Cafe

Th main character at this cafe is Sanrio’s My Melody. This cafe at Sanrio Puroland offers various My Melody themed desserts and sweets.

The cafe opened in 2015 in honor of the 40th anniversary of the character. The original inspriration was the character was “Little Red Riding Hood.” She changes into pastel colors and becomes more stylish with cherries and flowers.

#4. Gundam Cafe

Gundam is a science fiction media franchise that features giant robots called “mobile suits.” The franchise started in 1979 as an anime, later the popularity rose to multiple television series and OVAs, movies, manga, novels, and video games.

This Gundam themed cafe serves curry, omelette rice, desserts, coffee, and other drinks. After 5:00 PM alcohol can be ordered. The gift shop sells souvenirs like mugs, cups, key chains, t-shirts, dishes, and food etc.

#5. Moomin House Cafe

The Moomin character was created by Tove Jansson in Finland and and it is very popular in Japan. The character resemble hippopotamuses, they are white and round. At the cafe there are many Moomin plushies and they sit with the customers while eating.

Coffee that is served at the cafe is very popular in Finland, the brand is called Robert’s Coffee and the most popular favor is blueberry. On your way out be sure to check the souvenir shop with many Moomin goods.

Shirokuma Cafe is a story about a laid back polar bear who is the owner of an organic cafe. The coffee beans are even roasted by a group of kangaroos. Most of the customers are animals that “work” at the local zoo. This is an anime for animals lovers. On your way out, don’t forget to grab some stationary and a mug. The have drinks, coffees, desserts, and a few savory options.

#7. Lien de Sazae-san

Sazae-san started as a four panel comic in 1946. The original comics were about Sazae-san, she wanted to be herself instead of trying to find a husband. She eventually marries and the comics describe what she does daily. During the time it was being published, it was considered controversial. It is seen as a nostalgia back to a more simpler Japan without modern technology. In 1969, Fuji Television made it into an anime, airing on Sundays at 6:30 PM. It is the longest-running anime and non-soap opera scripted TV series in history. At Lien de Sazae-san they serve face-shaped pancakes filled with whip cream and jam, sweet red bean, honey, custard, or chocolate. They also have ice cream, coffee, and ice tea. Don’t forget to stop at the gift shop for a tote bag or thermos.

The Peanuts is a comic strip that was created by Charles M. Schulz in 1950. The comic strips focus on a society with no adults and the main character in Charlie Brown. The Beagle Snoopy is Charlie Brown’s dog. The Peanuts Cafe offers burgers, pasta, drinks, desserts, and salads as the main course. Some popular goods at the gift shop are the tote bags and the mug cups.

Peter Rabbit is a fictional character from children’s’ books that started in 1902. This cafe is serves dishes using seasonal vegetables. The restaurant feels like a garden and it is very peaceful. There is a rabbit logo somewhere in every dish.

#10. Cafe Mugiwara Boshi

Cafe Mugiwara Boshi is in the Studio Ghibili museum. Mugiwara Boshi means straw hat. You can see orange wall and red window frames of the cafe. For a limited time there is omelet rice, curry, cheese cake, and peach soda. The usual menu has sandwiches, cake, and coffee.

Studio Ghibili was founded in 1985 by Hayao Miyazaki, Toshio Suzuki, Isao Takahata, and Yasuyoshi Tokuma. Studio Ghibili movies have grab the hearts of millions.
