What is Zauo?

Zauo is a restaurant where customers can fish for their dinner! First you purchase some bait and rent a fishing pole. When first entering the restaurant, there is a huge boat in the center of the room surrounded by a moat with different kinds of fish swimming around.

Do keep in mind that there is no “catch and release”, what you catch is what you eat. Dinner prices can range from 4,000 to 5,000 yen. Many branches of the restaurant require reservations. Fishing can take time, so it is recommended not to arrive overly hungry.

You start fishing, if the fish aren’t coming over the staff can give you some advice. Eventually the fish will go for the bait and you get to catch the fish with your own hands. When a fish is caught, everyone is the restaurant will be cheering.

Zauo does fish well. There are four different ways the fish can be cooked. Sashimi is thinly cut raw fish. The word sashimi means “pierced body”. In 500 BCE, people in China started eating raw fish and it arrived in Japan during the Heian period. The word itself dates back to the Muromachi period.
Grilled or broiled fish is topped with salt, the fish is soft, juicy, and moist. Fish deep fried is crunchy outside and moist inside. Nigiri sushi is also available. Nigiri sushi is when the chef presses together a small rice ball and a piece of fish into an oval. There are all different types of fish that can be used for nigiri sushi. One fish can be prepared in two different styles. Some fish swimming around the boat sea breams, flounders, and lobsters. If you are unable to catch something, you can order directly off the menu.
