10 Things to Do in Ikebukuro

Ikebukuro is a mix of fashion and anime. With many department stores and brand name shops, it is a great place to shop. The flagship Animate store is a must visit spot for all manga and anime fans.

Animate is Japan’s largest and most famous store selling anime-related products. The main store, which is located in Ikebukuro is nine stories high, each floor is filled with comic books, CDs, DVDs, and other anime-related products.

The store is known not only for having a large variety of products, but also for having anime exhibitions or talk shows, and autograph events promoting popular voice actors. Animate is a holy place for all anime-lovers to visit.

Neko no Iru Kyukeisho 299 is a the rest station where people can play with cats. “299” of the shop name is pronounced “nikukyu” in Japanese, it is a cute way to describe a cat’s foot. More than 20 cats can be seen playing, sleeping, and eating freely in the shop.

You can sit by them, touch them, take photos, and play with them. The cost is set up as a time-rated fare. Playing with cats is one way to relieve the stress of a big city.

Book and Bed Tokyo is a hostel located in Ikebukuro. It boasts an extremely unique sort of accommodation and a low price so you can stay on a budget and get some reading done too. They offer two types of rooms, one where you stay inside of a bookshelf and one where you get a slightly more private bunk along with you choice of two types of beds.

Tokugawa Tsunayoshi, the fifth Tokugawa shogun, established Gokokuji Temple to offer prayers for the soul of his mother Keishoin in 1681.

The current Kannon Hall or Main Hall was built in 1697 and is considered important both historically and culturally to Japan. Gokokuji Temple is considered one of the most important and best examples of architectural arts from the Genroku period. The temple is a short walk from Gokokuji Station.

#5. Sunshine Aquarium

Sunshine Aquarium

Located at Sunshine City Ikebukuro, Sunshine Aquarium is the first rooftop aquarium, located on the World Import Mart building in Japan.

It has been popular since opening because of the electric eels, clione, sun-fish, and jellyfish. It is also famous for Japan’s first recreated coral reef aquarium. The aquarium has been awarded “Certificate of Excellence” by TripAdvisor.

Konica Minolta Planetarium is one of Japan’s major electrical appliance makers. It is also the only major manufacturer of planetariums that operates its own theaters. The planetarium Konica Minolta Planetarium is located in Sunshine City, a commercial complex near JR Ikebukuro Station.

It features a relaxation program with pleasant aromas and soft music. Visitors can now lie on artificial grass or on a large white sofa to relax and have the perfect view of the night sky. English audio guides are available free of charge at Konica Minolta Planetarium.

Namja Town is an indoor theme park operated by Namco, one of the major amusement companies, in Sunshine City. Namja Town consists of three towns, such as Dokkingham Plaza a western-styled town where you can play various games, Namja Gyoza Stadium, Fukubukuro Dessert Yokocho, and Fukubukuro 7-chome Shopping Street.

Located just in front of JR Ikebukuro Station, Seibu Ikebukuro is the main branch of Seibu Department Store Chain. Seibu Ikebukuro is twelve stories high, each floor is filled with the latest fashion, world famous brands, cosmetics, jewelry, restaurants and almost everything you could want.

Ikebukuro is also a popular spot for manga and anime fans, with so many maid cafes one spot to visit is Maid Cafe Maidreamin. At the cafe you are greeted by cute maids when you walk in, they all say “Welcome home master”.
