#1. Kurobe Dam

Kurobe Dam, the largest arch type concrete dam in Japan was completed in 1963. Throughout the year, rich and clean water is created and is used for many purposes such as hydroelectric power generation, water supply, etc. The dam’s discharge for tourists is carried out during the day from late June to mid-October. You can view it from various angles, with a big panorama.

Ai no Kura Gassho Zukuri Shuraku, has the characteristic structure which is named Gassho. It is a Japanese traditional architectural style, characterized by steep roofs. There are still residents living within the village making it a valuable place to the get a real feeling of Japan’s classic countryside. Depending on the time of day it is possible to view the illumination of the village, and it becomes a fantasy world that is so very different from the villages daytime scenery.

#3. Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route

Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route, is a mountain sightseeing route connecting Tateyama Station (Toyama Prefecture) and Fanazawa Station (Nagano Prefecture). As for this area, it is difficult to enter with most vehicles because the road is steep. You will cross the Tateyama by ropeway, cable car or old-fashioned trolley bus. However, the nature seen there just as the road turns rugged seems to have come from another world! It is a definitely a once in a lifetime experience for sightseeing.

#4. Amaharashi Beach

Amaharashi Beach is a coast located in the northern part of Takaoka city, in Toyama Prefecture. It is a famous coast where magnificent Toyama Bay and Tateyama mountain (3,000 m class) can be seen at the same time. Near Kearashi, the early mornings of winter on the Ameyasu coast are often met with amazing storms. It is said that a strange phenomenon occurs because cold air on the land slowly flows down to the sea causing fog to occur from the water vapor on the sea surface. It is a rare moment that can be seen only when various conditions overlap during a storm.

#5. Fugan Canal Water Park

Fugan Canal Water Park , is a city park surrounded by beautiful greenery, only a 10-minute walk from the entrance of JR Toyama Station. At in the evening the water park is replaced by bustle of night, the entire park is colored with beautiful illuminations and is wrapped in a romantic atmosphere. It is a famous spot for a date. Although it is a great place to visit alone, I would recommended visiting as a couple! There is Starbucks in the park if you would like to enjoy coffee while watching beautiful scenery. However, it is worth mentioning that this is a specialty Starbucks store and only 13 exist nationwide. You can also access the Starbucks from the station, so it is perfect for killing time until your train arrives!

#6. Unazuki Onsen

Unazuki Onsen, is the largest hot spring village in Toyama in the eastern part of Toyama Prefecture (Kurobe-shi). Not only hot springs but plenty of inns, hotels, souvenir shops and other shops line the are attracting many tourists. In addition, it is also a starting point for the truck train of “Kurobe Gorge Railroad” previously introduced. It is a great place to heal a tired body with hot springs and experience the nature of the nearby mountains. It is said that the hot spring water of Unazuki Onsen is weak in alkaline and does little to irritate the skin. Furthermore, because it contains a lot of bicarbonate ions and minerals, it is said to stimulate the nerves of the intestines. It is surrounded by great nature and it gives you a blissful feeling, being soaked in one of the best hot springs in the world.

Toyama Black Ramen, is a kind of local noodle that originates from the center of Toyama city in Toyama Prefecture. Not only the ramen but also the colorful soup inside Toyama prefecture is famous. Now, after winning recognition as a Toyama’s local ramen, the number of stores that serve the dish have increased dramatically. Although, it has not yet achieved majority positions in terms of market share throughout the nation.

#8. Kurobe Gorge Railway

Kurobe Gorge Railway, is located in the eastern part of Toyama prefecture, it is a large canyon that forms a deep V-shaped gorge that stands out in the upper and middle waters of the Kurobe River that flows down the entire length of its 86 km. Here you can enjoy a beautiful natural 360 degree panoramic view. Moreover, you can reach this amazing nature by train in about 1 hour and 30 minutes each way from Unazuki Station.

#9. Shomyo Falls

Shomyo Falls, is a large waterfall that boasts Japan’s furthest drop of 350 meters. Is knows as a nationally designated scenic location and natural monument. It was also part of “100 Japanese Waterfall Elections” selected by public offering in 1990. The “Phantom waterfall” appears on the right side of the falls and the second section, called “Hanoki Falls”, only appears when water levels increase. Some times the drop at the falls reaches close to 500 meters, although, because it does not always appear it is not recognized as the furthest drop.

#10. Murodo Daira

Murododaira, is located at an altitude of 2,450 m and is the center of the alpine route in Japan. It is a great base for sightseeing. Nearby you can see “Mikuri Dake Pond”, the deepest alpine lake in the Japanese Alps, and “Jigokudani” where you can witness volcanic activities. You can feel the magnificence of nature here.

#11. Takaoka Big Buddha

Takaoka Big Buddha, is an Amitabha Nature image of about 16 m high in Otemachi, Takaoka city, Toyama prefecture. Alongside Nara and Kamakura, it is called on of “the three biggest Buddha in Japan”. It is a symbol of Takaoka city.It is located in the city area about 10 minutes from the nearest station JR Takaoka station and about 16m towering up in the city. This big Buddha-like figure weighs an outstanding 65 tons!
