14 Things to Do in Yamanashi

Have you ever visited Yamanashi, which is located east of Tokyo? Since it's easily accessible from the center of Tokyo, Yamanashi is a great place to escape city life. There is many things to do and sights to see.

The first place we would like to introduce is Fuji Q Highland. It is located near Mt. Fuji in the Yamanashi prefecture. #2. Hottarakashi Onsen


If you may know, Yamanashi is one of the best places to visit hot springs. Although there are dozens of hot spring resorts, Hottarakashi Onsen is quite unique and famous. Hottarakashi literally means unattended or being left alone, allowing you to spend time more freely than other places. Hottarakashi Onsen opens one hour before sunrise, you can enjoy magnificent views of the sunrise if the weather is good.

#3. Fuefuki Wine


Fuefuki city has suitable land for wine making, therefore it plays an important role in wine production in Yamanashi. You can experience grape picking as well as wine making. In early December, the wine will be delivered to your house!

#4. Fuji-Goko

Lake Kawaguchi

Fuji-Goko is the general term for the Fuji Five Lakes which lies at the foot of Mt.Fuji in Yamanashi. Among them, Lake Yamanaka and Lake Kawaguchi are especially famous and popular as a summer resorts and sightseeing spots. Since its easily accessible from Tokyo, many tourists come to this area because there is various tourist facilities and accommodations. #5. Saruhashi Bridge


Saruhashi Bridge is a designated National Scenic Spot. The structure of Saruhashi Bridge is unique when compared to others. The bridge attracts the most tourists in autumn, since autumn leaves are breathtakingly beautiful. It is surely worth visiting and taking pictures when in Yamanashi.

#6. Narusawa Ice Cave

Narusawa Ice Cave

The Narusawa Ice Cave is located at the east entrance of the Aokigahara Sea of Trees. It is covered with ice throughout the year at an average temperature of three degrees Celsius, and consists of two tunnels which are geologically precious. Icicles are sometimes three meters long, they are definitely worth seeing. The Narusawa Ice Cave attracts tourists throughout the year and is counted as one of the best sightseeing places around Fuji-Goko.

#7. Shingen Mochi

Shingen Mochi

Shingen Mochi is a traditional Japanese sweet. This sweet looks like a huge water droplet, it is cover with kinako powder and topped with kuromitsu. One shop to try in Yamanashi is Kinseiken Daigahara. It is extremely popular, the Shingen Mochi is available only on Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays from June to September.

#8. Nishizawa Gorge 

Nishizawa Gorge

The Nishizawa Gorge is a valley located near the border of Saitama, Nagano and Gunma. It takes only three hours from the center of Tokyo by public transportation. You can see a lot of waterfalls while walking along the valley. Among them, you cannot help stopping and taking pictures at Nanatsugama Godan no Taki, which was chosen as one of the Best 100 Waterfalls in Japan.

#9. Yamanashi Flower Center 

Yamanashi Flower Center

Yamanashi Flower Center or Haiji no Mura is a themed village which reproduces the world of “Heidi, Girl of the Alps”. There is such a wide variety of flowers, it is recommend to go during the spring to see all of the blooming flowers. Enjoy seasonal events, flower garden illuminations, and roses gardens. This garden is a great place for the whole family.

#10. Fugaku Fuketsu Wind Cave

Fugaku Fuketsu Wind Cave

Fugaku Fuketsu Wind Cave is located 800 meters away from Narusawa Hyoketsu introduced earlier, and is famous for big icicles. It was used as a natural refrigerator at the time when there was no means of refrigeration. The cave is 201 meters long and 8.7 meters high, when inside it the cave mysteriously no sounds echo inside the cave. Since its a horizontal cave, its an easy walk for the elderly and children.

#11. Kiyosato Kogen


Kiyosato Kogen is located near the southern Yatsugatake Mountains. At an altitude of 1,200 meters, it is full of attractions, such as beautiful views which change from season to season.


There are many tasty restaurants serving freshly made milky ice cream. There are many petting zoos, so Kiyosato Kogen is a great spot for families. 


#12. Shosenkyo


Shosenkyo is a gorge designated as a place of Special Scenic Beauty. Shosenkyo is a 20 minute car ride from JR Kofu Station. This gorge is unique because of the usually shaped stones and beautiful waterfalls. Due to the difference in elevation, you can enjoy viewing the autumn leaves for over one month.

Shiraito Falls is a huge 150 meter wide waterfall. It has a long history of people sitting under the waterfall for meditation and many ascetic monks experienced this mediation. The magnificent waterfall has 1.5 tons water dropping per second, many people visit the waterfall every year. Being surrounded by peaceful nature will put your mind and body at peace.
