The Winter Illuminations in Roppongi Hills in 2016-2017 Gets Better Every Year

The Starry Sky Illumination 2016-2017 and the Artelligent Christmas 2016 in Roppongi Hills are must-see illuminations while in Tokyo. During the holidays, illumination events attract many people, this year the ever-popular Kimi no Na wa. is incorporated for a limited time.

Roppongi Hills in Tokyo is known for the delicious restaurants and luxurious shopping. The illuminations are even more amazing every year. There are multiple illumination spots in Roppongi.

The Roppongi Hills Starry Sky Illumination 2016-2017 is a magnificent illumination with approximately 1.2 million lights along Keyakizaka, which is about 400 meters. Two different colors of light, which are cold colors and warm hours, will entertain you according to the time. The combination of white and blue lights is called “snow and blue” and the even is popular every year. Warm colors will be changed from “candle and red” to “candle and amber” which is based on amber colors. All kinds of lights will lit up along Keyakizaka to create a festive atmosphere. This year there is a new feature involving smart phones, change the color of your power stone while walking along the illumination.

Additionally, a huge Christmas tree decorated with 1,200 lights and ornaments will appear at the entrance gate of Roppongi Hills called 66 Plaza. The 7.5 meter tree is covered in Christmas colors such as red, green and gold, it gives off the feeling of a holy night. Starting on November 26th, the 10th anniversary Christmas market will be open in the area. The Christmas market in Stuttgart, Germany is the world largest Christmas market, the market here is reproduced. Eleven shops are lined with more than 1,000 kinds of Christmas ornaments and German cuisine. To celebrate the 10th anniversary, there a special items on sale for a limited time.

During this period, various events will be held such as Christmas concerts, the Fir Tree Shop, and you can make Christmas cards inside Roppongi Hills. At the Hills observatory, Illumination of a Starry Sky will be held from the November 23, 2016 to January 29, 2017. The origin of illuminations is said to be that people who were moved by a beautiful shiny starry sky tried to reproduce the stars by decorating candles around Fir trees. At the “Illumination of a Starry Sky”, by a using planetarium and projection mapping, shiny stars are reproduced.

There are three main areas. The first one is the Window Projection Mapping. Sixteen windows which usually shows a full view of the night scenery of the city center changes to a huge screen which reflects projection mapping from sunset to closing time. You can even manipulate the screen by using your smart phone. The second one is at the planetarium, the event is called “Megastar”, which is produced by the planetarium creator, Ohira Takayuki. You will be surrounded by a sky full of stars. It feels as if you are in space walking around this magical area. The last area is the “3D Sky Walk”. The sparkling stars reproduced are based on the latest astronomical observational data. The way the stars sparkling, it seems as if they are alive!

Additionally, the “Starry Sky Observation Club” is usually held every fourth Friday, but during the Illumination of a Starry Sky period, it will be held every Saturday. Especially on December 14th, a special Gemini Meteoric Shower watching event will be held, it is one of the three largest meteor streams. Winter is the best season to watch the stars because of the clear sky. You can use a telescope to watch the starry sky in winter while listening to the explanations from professionals.

In collaboration with the extremely popular hit movie, Kimi no Na wa. there is going to be an exhibit. With the theme, an illumination under the stars, scenes from Kimi no Na wa. are going to be project on a large screen. There is also an interactive event using your smartphone. The exhibit is going to be open form November 23rd, 2016 to January 29th, 2017. After going through the interactive exhibit, enjoy the Kimi no Na wa. themed parfait, Comet Parfait and other sweet treats. There will also be original goods on sale for a limited time.
