Kyoto Hanatoro Illuminates Beautiful Parts of Kyoto in 2016-2017

Many districts in Kyoto are illuminated and the event is called Hanatoro. The illuminated bamboo forest is even more beautiful than ever. Hanatoro is becoming more popular over the years.

Kyoto was the capital of Japan and home to the emperor for over one thousands years. The city is full of tourist attractions, many are designated World Heritage Sites and time-honored traditions and cultures. Kyoto also boasts its natural beauty of each season. Aiming at the creation of a new seasonal night event, Kyoto Hantoro, themed “light”, has been held in Higashiyama region since March 2003. Temples and shrines of Kyoto along with historic cultural assets and streets are illuminated with Japanesque paper lanterns.

In addition to Kyoto Higashiyama Hanatoro, Hantoro in Saga and Arashiyama started in December 2005. Now you can enjoy two types of Hanatoro, Arashiyama in December 2016 and Higashiyama in March 2017.

Kyoto Arashiyama Hanatoro 2016 is about a 5 km walkway, the bamboo forest is illuminated and there are paper lanterns along the walkway. This event is held from December 9th to December 18th, 2016.

The Arashiyama Hanatoro consists of three parts, the Light and Blossoms Pathway, the Togetsukyo Bridge area and the bamboo forest walkway. Temples, shrines, and cultural assets of Arashiyama, such as Tenryuji Temple, Nonomiya Shrine and Okochisanso Villa are illuminated and shine against dark sky. Voluminous flower arrangement pieces are on display along the Light and Blossoms pathway. During the period, temples, shrines and cultural assets in Arashiyama are open until 8:30 PM. Only Tenryuji Temple closes at 5:00 PM.

Togetsukyo Bridge is illuminated, the surrounding foothills and waterfront paths are breathtaking from the night lights. Both sides of walkway in the bamboo forest are illuminated from Nonomiya Shrine to Okouchi Sanso Villa. Walking in the illuminated bamboo forest is fantastic and romantic.

Higashiyama Hanatoro

Higashiyama Hanatoro 2017 is a 5 km walking path decorated with about 2,500 lanterns in the foothills of Higashiyama Mountain through Shoren-in Temple, Maruyama Park and Yasaka Shrine to Kiyomizu-dera Temple, the event is held from March 3rd to March 12th, 2017. Illumination hours is from 6:00 PM to 9:30 PM.

The Light and Blossoms Pathway produced by ROHM co., a semiconductor company based in Kyoto shows various displays, such as faint lights that beautify the store fronts of Monzen-machi, soft lights that reflect off the stone pavement, lights swaying among the trees. Abundant flower arrangement pieces are on display along the Light and Blossoms pathway. Contemporary Ikebana Exhibitions are held in Maruyama Park during the period.

Takeakari, about one thousand Toro lights made of young bamboo are made into candles, they are placed on the Yoshimizu Stream and flow through Maruyama Park, they create a mysterious atmosphere. Maiko, apprentice geisha, dedicate their dances to Kagura Hall at Yasaka Shrine. Local school children march through the Light and Blossoms Pathway, playing wooden clappers, bells, and drums while singing children’s songs about watching the fire.
