The Shibuya Shopping Guide for Shopaholics Looking for Trends

Shibuya can a little bit of a maze, but Shibuya has some of the best shopping. With many department stores, trend-setting stores, and restaurants, there is something to buy while shopping in Shibuya.

Shibuya is one of Tokyo’s most colorful and busy districts, packed with shopping, dining, and nightclubs serving mobs of visitors that come to the district everyday. Shibuya is the center of youth fashion and culture, and the streets are the birthplace of many of Japan’s fashion and entertainment trends. Over a dozen major department store branches can be found around the area catering to all types of shoppers. Shibuya offers interesting sights, including the famed Hachiko statue, Shibuya Crossing, and the Meiji Jingu Shrine. Shibuya can be a bit of a maze, this guide for shopping in Shibuya will get you to the correct spot.


#1. Shibuya 109

Shibuya 109 is a trend setting fashion complex for young women and is an icon of the Shibuya district with more than one hundred boutiques on ten floors. Usually pronounced “Shibuya ichi maru kyu”, the complex’s name can also be read as “Shibuya to kyu”, identifying the complex as part of the Tokyu Group. Shibuya 109 is located diagonally across from Shibuya Station packed with fashion boutiques for the under-30 glamour girl. When in Shibuya this is a must-visit shopping experience.

#2. Shibuya Hikarie


Shibuya Hikarie is probably Shibuya’s most visually striking building, 34 floors high just outside the East Exit of Shibuya Station near Aoyama-dori. Shibuya Hikarie is full of trendy, elegant shopping, and relaxation opportunities. This shopping complex is more for the professional setting. Shibuya Hikarie features a more relaxed pace than the high-powered youth-oriented commerce that dominates the west Shibuya area. The Tokyu Theater Orb cinema complex is on the 11th to 16th floors of Shibuya Hikarie and also includes cafes and restaurants. Shibuya Hikarie has a direct pedestrian connection to the subway and JR lines of Shibuya Station.

Tokyu Hands Shibuya on Inokashira-dori is the flagship store of the almost thirty Tokyu Hands branches spread throughout Japan. This 8-floor “creative life store” stocks everything from stationery, design tools, health & beauty, kitchen, bath & toiletry, cleaning & laundry, home décor, bags, wallets, travel, rain gear, cycling, variety goods, mobile phone accessories, crafts, tools & materials and more. You could be shopping at Shibuya’s Tokyu Hands for two to three hours because there is so much interesting stuff.

Uniqlo is a large chain of casual clothing stores for men and women which has a reputation for providing good quality at a good price. It is one of Japan’s top clothing retail chain in terms of sales volume and profit. Uniqlo now has stores in China, Hong Kong, South Korea, UK, USA, France, Singapore and several other countries. Uniqlo offers jeans, sweatshirts, t-shirts, knitwear, and many more products which are all designed simply. Back when Uniqlo first opened, it was more known for cheap prices than its designs. However, improvements in quality of materials, and stylish advertisement collaborating with famous artists, musicians and designers, gained popularity among young people. This is a store that should be on your shopping list when in Shibuya.

Matsumoto Kiyoshi is Japan’s leading chain of pharmacies (drug stores). At Matsumoto Kiyoshi, they not only sell drugs, but also commodities like toiletries, kitchen utensils, food etc. Recently the stores have more cosmetics, so you can get Japanese high-quality products for a rather low price. In addition, sales are often held, so checking each store’s sale items is recommended. On top of that, shopping here is popular with tourists because of the duty-free services and free Wi-Fi services. If you are conscious of beauty and health, we highly recommend visiting. The Shibuya Matsumoto Kiyoshi is split into two and they are a short one minute walk away from each other.

Shibuya Mark City is a small city within the city, located just next to and connected with JR Shibuya Station. Shibuya Mark City is a smart, modern complex with a 25-story East Tower containing the Shibuya Excel Hotel Tokyu and a 23-story office block West Tower. From the B1 to 4th floors is shopping and, on the 4th floor, an excellent selection of restaurants. This Shibuya shopping complex has over 70 restaurants and shops. On the second floor of Shibuya Mark City is Shibuya Station on the Keio Inokashira Railway Line.

Don Quijote, popularly known as “Donki” is widely known for cheap and fun miscellaneous products. It is a chain of discount stores selling a wide range of products. Donki stores are like walking through a cluttered warehouse of random products ranging from alcohol and food to home electronics and car supplies. Merchandise is stacked high, just inches below the ceiling. It’s almost as if you are on a treasure hunt in a labyrinth. Most stores are open into the wee hours of the morning, usually busy with young customers who seem to have nothing more fun to do. The Shibuya store spans four levels, selling miscellaneous fashion accessories and snacks. Shopping at the Shibuya Donki could have you wondering around for an hour or more.

Tower Records was given an extensive overhaul in late 2012 that increased its whopping 5,000 square meters of floor space. There’s now a bookstore and a café on the 2nd floor, the music sections now give prominent placement to back cataloged stock as well as new arrivals, and there’s a video streaming venue called Tower Revolve Project in the basement, plus extra space for live performances. Tower Records Shibuya is one of the largest music retail stores in the world with floors one through seven all dedicated to selling music. This is your go-to store in Shibuya when shopping for music.

#10. Bic Camera Shibuya

Bic Camera sells a wide range and large number of products, from the latest general electronics such as domestic appliances, electrical beauty products, and cameras. The stores near the east exit of the station are divided into the Main Store and Annex Store, and you can find a different array of products in each. At Bic Camera Shibuya, there are many systems in place to help improve tourists’ shopping experience. For example, there are always English-speaking staff on shift. If you need advice, or don’t understand the difference between certain products, being able to directly ask an employee is a real blessing. Also at Bic Camera, if you’re a foreign visitor, you can buy all items free of tax. All you have to do is show your passport at the checkout.

Parco is a shopping complex with an emphasis on fashion. The complex was closed in August 2016 and will be rebuilt. It will reopen around 2019. Parco Shibuya used to be a great place to shop but since it is being rebuilt, it will be even more amazing in 2019.

Loft is similar to Tokyu Hands in being a boutique department store, but perhaps is a little more chic in its youth-orientation.
