Looking for that perfect bar to take your date to on a romantic night out? Or you may be a movie fan looking for a retro atmosphere to sip drinks at. If neither description fits you, perhaps you are that curious tourist looking forward to spending your night in one of the busiest districts in Tokyo in a rather unorthodox bar. If so, welcome to Hachi Gatsu no Kujira (8月の鯨), a cocktail bar that prides itself on making alcoholic drinks inspired by movies.
While it may not be one of your cheap, go-to drinking spots, with a surprisingly bustling atmosphere and retro-themed interior, it definitely serves as a good memory maker and is worth checking out. Located near the heart of one of the main streets in Shibuya, its easy accessibility makes it even more attractive.
Once you step in, you will be led to either a table or counter seat. Both are good options, as the waiters and bartenders are equally attentive regardless of the number of customers at the moment. After being seated, you will be offered an extensive list of cocktails themed after movies—both old and new—with descriptions on the base and type of drink. Your all-time favorite movie not on the menu? Don’t worry, you can always request out of the menu and as long as it is a movie that the bartender has watched and knows of, he will quickly make something on the spot as well!
Captain America, topped with fresh fruit embellishments, is based on the movie…. You’ve guessed it, Captain America!
Totoro, from Tonari no Totoro (My Neighbor Totoro), looking fine and grand sitting on a cocktail glass filled with Oreo shake-base liquor.
This cocktail very much resembles the contaminated blood injected into the milk carton of the two victims of the movie Kokuhaku (Confessions)-though the strawberry liquor seeping through at the bottom of the glass seems much more preferable!
The more popular cocktails, which always seem to be high on demand resemble more of a parfait than a cocktail sometimes, and makes for a perfect Instagram photo as well. Some of the cocktails on the menu (such as Charlie and the Chocolate Factory) are everyone’s favorite, and they run out of supply really fast even on weekdays, so consider yourself lucky if you order and manage to get a chance to try it out!
They also serve more conventional alcohol, so if you’re not feeling like risking wasting your money on something you might end up not enjoying, you can order your usual favorite drink.
