Shinjuku is packed with restaurants and there are many budget travelers. Izakayas are chill restaurants to grab some food and have a drink. Izakayas are budget friendly and serve delicious food.

For those of you who haven’t been around the Land of the Rising Sun much, Shinjuku is a metro area in the capital city of Tokyo. It is the face of modern Japan with high-rise buildings, government headquarters, city administration center and is home to the world’s busiest railway station and one of the highest population densities. It is kind of like Times Square in New York but even bigger and arguably better!

So, just like any big city, you’ll need to know where to find the affordable meals or you will go bankrupt in the middle of the city. Here is a list of top quality, yet affordable restaurants throughout Shinjuku so that you can enjoy your stay, all while remaining on a tight budget.

 

#1. Shinjuku Wine Kitchen

This restaurant just near Seibu Shinjuku station is really nice. Their cuisine is wide ranging and designed for people from all walks of life and from cheap to pricey. It is open from 5 PM to midnight each day of the week because that is when Shinjuku gets most of its visitors. The are only 20 seats in the restaurant but there are also private dining rooms available.

If you like grilled chicken at an fair price, this is the place for you and it’s in the heart of Tokyo. Located near the Seibu-Shinjuku station, only 289 meters from Shinjuku Nishiguchi. Expect to pay between 2,000 to 2,900 Yen for this restaurants quality.

A more traditional style restaurant serving sushi, seafood, etc. Decent prices for as well! A typical meal costs around 3,000-4,000 Yen in this restaurant but it is a bigger place than many on this list with seating arrangements for over 120 people. Most of the restaurants are small here so if you are looking for a spacious place, this is somewhere to check out. It is also open 5PM to midnight, with private dining rooms as well.

#4. Torishige

Shinjuku Izakaya

Located near the Shinjuku South Exit, Torishige is a premium restaurant in the middle of Shinjuku with another branch present in Nagoya. It has the rare luxury of an English speaking staff, so if you are feeling lost after reaching Japan, you might feel at home here. There is little danger of ordering the wrong food due to miscommunication! Open from 5 PM till midnight, but it is able to stretch its hours to 1 AM provided the customer reached there before midnight. A meal here is somewhat costly at 7,000 Yen.

What I really like about it beyond the food is that it’s open quite late so if you have missed all other places, there is a good chance this might be open. A typical meal here with drinks costs around 3000 Yen and the atmosphere is great.

Ore no Sakana wo Kuttemiro is located near Shinjuku Nishiguchi Station, it is a populous area and specializes in Izakaya(Tavern), seafood and other Japanese specialties.It is one of the few that closes a little early at 11 PM; so if you’d like to give this place a visit, I suggest reaching there a bit earlier than usual. Now this is one of the most affordable places on this list, here you’ll be able to can keep your budget balanced. Tanto has some really innovative dish ideas with a separate dining area. The nearest station is Seibu Shinjuku and the meals cost around 1500 Yen. It is open until 5 in the morning, making it a great spot to go after a night out on the town, especially if you’ve missed your train!

Another place to check out for budget meals costing a little over 1000 Yen is Genki Kaifukudo. Located near Shinjuku station, Genki Kaifukudo offers traditional Izakaya experience and one of the local favorites Kushiyaki.
