Upon entering the Kawaii Monster Cafe in Harajuku, Japan you are leaving behind all sense of normal and thrust into a colorful world of cute monsters and sweet cakes. The Kawaii Monster Cafe is the brainchild of Sebastian Masuda, who is best known as the art director of the world famous Kyary Pamyu Pamyu. In true Harajuku fashion, the Kawaii Monster Cafe holds nothing back in it’s over-the-top colors, kooky monsters, and original food creations which come to life in this uniquely Japanese experience.
As the elevator doors opens visitors immediately see an incredibly colorful storefront with a large monster with yellow moving eyes which sets the tone this “Kawaii” experience. The staff quickly greets customers and gives them 4 different types of seating areas to dine; MUSHROOM DISCO, MILK STAND, Bar Experiment, and the Mel-Tea ROOM. Enter through the bright red doors and visitors are greeted by thumping electronic melodies and a brightly lit cake merry-go-round which signals visitors that they are now entering a world that is so unique, they couldn’t possibly imagine it in their wildest of dreams.
As visitors make their way to their seats they can walk through the different themes of the Kawaii Monster Cafe, leaving them curious of what amazing things they can discover within this new world.
Visitors flock from around the globe to get a glimpse of the insane designs that make up this cafe and equally as important, the food!
Food, drinks, and sweets are ordered on a “Kawaii” cake which goes along perfectly with the overall atmosphere of this unique dining experience. From here you can choose from one-of-a-kind drinks, foods, and desserts that are only created here in a Kawaii Monster Cafe style.
All that is surreal becomes real at the Kawaii Monster Cafe where you can eat Colorful Rainbow Pasta. A multicolored pasta which is presented with multicolored sauces leaving the visitors eyes confused about if this is actually an edible dish. It does’t stop here as visitors can order an array of different quirky foods with equally as eye bending presentations.
The highlight of the Kawaii Monster Cafe is most definitely the sweets, as the way to any Harajuku lovers heart is through sweets! The Colorful Poison Parfait is the most popular but there are other colorful sweets such as the Colorful Poison Cake.
Every last detail of this restaurant is thought out very carefully in unique ways to bring every corner of this restaurant alive in what can only be done in the Harajuku style which most definitely can’t be replicated anywhere around the world.
