This winter holiday in Asakusa, Tokyo, you’ll be able to witness a once in a lifetime event. In partnership with Bandai Namco and Asakusa’s famous rickshaw store Kuruma Shop, you’ll be able to cruise through the streets of the city in a giant Pacman themed rickshaw if you are one of the lucky few to be selected.

In 19th century Japan, the rickshaw was considered the main source of transportation around the country and although the popularity of the rickshaw ended up dwindling in the 1900’s due to cars and trains, the novelty of the rickshaw remains. The two person rickshaw is still popular among couples and tourists looking to experience some classic Japan action.

This Pacman rickshaw is an extremely limited time deal and part of Bandai Namco’s Asbobimotto project which aims to expand culture and business in Japan. If you are looking to hitch a ride, you’ll have to sign up on the registration site as early as possible for yours and one other person’s chance to win a ride in this strange carriage.

During the ride you’ll take a 15 to 20 minute ride around the tourist attractions of Asakusa. Don’t be alarmed if you see people chasing this 2 meter tall Pacman lookalike down the street for a photo opportunity. If you are able to get a long exposure photo of the rickshaw in transit, you’ll be able see an amazing image of the ghosts chasing Pacman and a little holiday message to boot. The pixelstick that produces the image on the back of the rickshaw is one of the main features of the event and I’m sure there will be plenty of opportunities to take some shots.

The path you’ll take in the rickshaw leads you through Sumida park and around the river bringing you to a view of Tokyo Skytree and back around to your start point. To catch the rickshaw event in action you’ll need to make your way out to Asakusa, an area located in the Taito ward of Tokyo. Asakusa is famous as a religious district with it’s numerous Matsuri festivals and one of the largest and oldest Buddhist temples in Japan, Sensoji Temple.

The event runs from Friday the 23rd of December through Christmas night in Asakusa and allows those who are selected a unique rickshaw experience. Only 6 people per day will be able to ride the Pacman rickshaw so if you are interested you should register as soon as possible! Keep your eyes open if you’ve submitted an application for a ride on this weird rickshaw as only the winners will know where the rickshaw will depart from.
