Nakano Broadway – An Otaku Mecca in Tokyo

Of all the places to shop in Tokyo, Nakano Broadway and the surrounding mall is a must visit on your trip to Japan. Anime and manga fans can find anything and everything.

Do you enjoy anime, manga, or Japanese pop culture? How about just shopping in general? Then you have probably heard about Nakano Broadway. This shopping haven is a great place to for those who absolutely love Japanese pop culture. The building is over four stories with 280 stores for your enjoyment, the main shops sell many otaku goods.

The journey begins when you step out of the west exit at Nakano Station. The entrance to the Nakano Sun Mall Shopping Arcade is in sight; it is approximately 225 meters of stores and restaurants lining the path to Nakano Broadway (the ultimate goal). These stores sell everything from high-end watches to coffee to books (new and used), to pharmaceuticals, to fashion boutiques, to second-hand clothes and manga, and more. Not only in the main strip surrounded by these, but you can also veer off into side alleys which will lead you to even more restaurants, including izakaya.

Once you make it down the long strip of incredible stores, the five-story high building labeled Nakano Broadway is at the end to meet you. This large building has four levels of shopping, with the second and third levels dedicated to anime, manga, and collectibles, its an otaku’s paradise. These shops include figurines, game consoles, CDs, souvenirs, and video games all related to the extremely popular animation of Japan. The ground level of the complex has clothes, shoes, and second-hand goods, and the basement has a marketplace where you can buy groceries (including fresh meat and seafood). On the fourth level, there is a small doctor’s office (in case you get too overwhelmed with all the manga and anime goods on the lower floors and end up hyperventilating), a few shops, and storage for larger shops. The fifth floor has apartments. The roof has a garden, an open swimming pool, and a golf practice range.

There are a few stores that are a must see in Nakano Broadway. The most popular store is probably Mandarake, spanning three floors, this second-hand manga shop is truly a sight to behold. Not only does it have manga covering three walls on each floor, it also has collectibles, figurines, and other items from the popular manga and anime of Japan. Manga goes from about 105 yen to millions of yen, for rare, signed, or one off pieces. These include things like an original signed sketch from “My Neighbor Totoro” by Hayao Miyazaki. Not only can you buy second-hand items (which are generally like brand new here), but you have the option to sell as well. This chain store is one of the most popular in Nakano Broadway, but there are a lot more wonderful shops to visit.

Are you interested in celluloid prints (commonly referred to as cels) from some of your favorite anime? If you do not know what cels are, they are paintings on transparent plastic sheets that are used to create animations. Hand sketched pencil is Xeroxed onto a plastic sheet, and then the back side is painted in layers to form the desired image. These can be found at Anime World Star. Smaller cells or partial cells go for about 1,000 yen, while larger ones are around 4,500 yen. Anime World Star over 100,000 in stock at any given time, so the selection is huge and you will always find one you like. This is a must-visit spot for otakus.

Want to pose with a life-size Ultraman model? Or how about purchase a small Godzilla to put on a shelf at home? Then be sure to stop on the third floor in the store called Robot Robot. This store is stacked from top to bottom (literally, the rafters are even filled with them) of figurines, toys, and collectibles. There are your favorite characters from every anime or Japanese pop culture item you can think of! Even some older and more traditional Japanese figures can be found hiding around the shop. If figures are not your favorite souvenir, the shop itself is something you should not miss.

Nakano Broadway is an amazing sight to behold, it is a cornucopia of manga and anime. The people who go there are even interesting, as tourist and locals alike flood the shops and restaurants to submerge themselves in the “Cool Japan.” So, whether you enjoy anime or not, there is something for everyone at Nakano Broadway (from cooking ingredients, to fashion, to manga); it is a must-see stop during your visit to Japan, just be sure to not spend all of your money there!
