Which is the Best? Different Tokyo Train Passes Explained

Going from one side to the other in Tokyo is very convenient. If you are trying to see many sites, buying an all day train ticket might be a better option than individual tickets. Day passes are a great way to save money.

Tokyo is covered with amazing spots to sight-see, the city is a mix and historic and new. Getting around Tokyo is very convenient because there are 13 subway lines running through the city.

There are above ground trains as well as trains that are half underground and half above ground. If you plan to see as many sites as possible or want a more leisurely experience, there are different passes to meet your specific needs.

#1. Common One-day Ticket for Tokyo Metro and Toei Subway

This convenient pass can be used on all Tokyo Metro and Toei Subway Lines. The pass is good from the first train to the last train for one day which is around 5am until midnight or so depending on the line. You can ride the train as many times as needed. This one-day ticket can be purchased at the ticket vending machines in all Tokyo Metro and Toei Subway Stations.

#2. Tokyo Tour Ticket

This pass covers every form of transportation, from JR Lines, subway lines, Toei buses and street cars, plus the Nippori/Toneri Liner. The ticket can be purchased at JR stations, the View Plaza, and ticket machines at Tokyo Metro station and Toei Subway stations. The ticket is also valid for one day. It is worth noting that you can also reserve this ticket in advance and change days if needed

#3. Tokyo Subway Ticket

This ticket is a 24, 48, or 72 hour pass to ride all of the Tokyo Metro and Toei Subway lines. This pass can be purchased at Haneda Airport and Narita Airport or through specific travel agents.

24Hours: Adult 800 yen Child 400 yen
48Hours: Adult 1,200 yen Child 600 yen
72Hours: Adult 1,500 yen Child 750 yen

#4. Toei One-Day Economy Pass

This one day pass can be used for all Toei Subway, Nippori-Toneri Liner stations, and Toei buses and streetcars.

#5. Tokyo Metropolitan District Pass

This pass is specifically for the JR Lines only. The ticket can be purchased at JR Ticket Offices (Midori no Madoguchi) and Travel Service Centers. In Tokyo, the Yamanote Line run by JR East is an extremely popular way to get around Tokyo because it hits all of the major areas in a loop and the train comes every few minutes.
