December in Japan – What to Wear and the Average Temperature

December is the gateway to a winter wonderland in Japan as the temperature drops and the nights are illuminated with spectacular lights. This guide explains the average temperature and what to wear.

Japan is an island that vertically extends which makes its climate widely vary. From north to south, it is divided into 9 main regions, i.e., Hokkaido, Tohoku, Kanto, Chubu, Kansai, Chugoku, Shikoku, Kyushu, and Okinawa. When you traveling in Japan during December appropriate clothing is essential to keep you warm and comfortable during your trip. This article will guide throughout each region in December and what to wear in this season depending on your destination.

Hokkaido

Hokkaido

Average High: 3˚C (37.4˚F)  Average Low: -5˚C (23˚F)

In December, Hokkaido is in the middle of winter so the temperature will drop down lower than freezing. You could also face a large temperature gap between being inside and outside as the heat is turned on inside the buildings and public transportation, but it is extremely cold outside. You may need a warm sweater and a winter jacket to stay warm all day. The best footwear is a pair of thick socks and anti-slip waterproof shoes or winter boots. A scarf and hand gloves are a great option to keep you warm.

Tohoku

Tohoku

Average High: 4˚C (39.2˚F)  Average Low: -2˚C (28.4˚F)

In Tohoku the snow starts to fall in early December and gradually increases over the month. The snowfall here is quite heavy so the clothes to wear in this region is not much different from Hokkaido. A few layers of thermal warm underwear, a thick wool or fleece jacket along with additional winter accessories. For your feet, put on a pair of winter boots to avoid the snow from wetting your feet.

Kanto

Kanto

Average High: 12˚C (53.6˚F)  Average Low: 4˚C (39.2˚F)

Compared to Hokkaido and Tohoku, Kanto is much warmer. However, in the northern areas such as Tochigi, Ibaraki, and Gunma, it is rather cold. Whereas, Tokyo could be a little warmer and generally snow does not fall there. A light long-sleeved thermal inner shirt plus a sweater and a denim jacket or light down jacket will take care of you. For a child, two layers of warm sweaters and a thick winter hoodie or winter jacket will keep them comfortable. On certain days, you can face a harsh wind, so putting on a scarf will keep you warmer.

Kansai

Kansai

Average High: 12˚C (53.6˚F) Average Low: 4˚C (39.2˚F)

Kansai in December is little warmer but in in the hilly and forest areas such as Nara, Kyoto, and Shiga, it’s considered to be cold and sometimes snow will fall but quickly disappear. In both of these regions you may take a light down jacket or a thick hoodie with two layers of long-sleeved shirts or a thermal inner shirt. It quite often rains during this season so you have to wear socks and boots to protect your feet from the cold and the wet road.

Kyushu

Kyushu

Average High: 12˚C (53.6˚F) Average Low: 6˚C (42.8˚F)

Kyushu is a separate island that is detached from the Honshu Island of Japan which makes the air there pleasantly warm in December. It won’t be a problem if you wear a denim jacket or a warm sweater outside with one to two layers on the inside. Regular sports shoes or any type of shoes that is fully covers your feet will be appropriate.

Okinawa

Okinawa

Average High: 20˚C (68˚F) Average Low: 15˚C (59˚F)

Okinawa is the most southern place in Japan and is well known for its separately tropical climate. The weather is not as hot as it is in November but the temperature does not change too much. It’s not necessary to put on any warm clothing. Hence, a t-shirt or nice long dress and a pair of cute sandals are all you need.
