Kanto is further south to Tohoku and houses the capital city of Tokyo as well as some of the most attractive tourist destinations in the world. The average high temperature here is roughly 23°C and average low is around 15°C. Even in May the conditions can go somewhat cold in the capital of Japan so be prepared but overall, the area is amazing. May is also the last month you will be able to enjoy great weather before summer comes in and heats it up. Generally a T-shirt or even a light sweater will be comfortable in this weather but make sure to bring something extra for the evenings in case you get cold.

Kansai is also an important tourist destination in Japan. Kansai that is home to the former capitol of Japan, Kyoto, and the second largest city in Japan, Osaka. Each destination has endless historic architectures and parades to view. The average high temperature is 25°C while average low temperature is 15°C degree Celsius. Much like Kanto, the area has amazing weather for the month of May which means the recommended wear is the same, T-shirt or sweater with a jacket for the evening.

Kyushu is the southern most territory of Japan’s mainland and is home to important cities like Nagasaki and Fukuoka. The weather here tends to fluctuate so paying attention to the weather is important. May brings along many rainy days in Kyushu so be prepared with some rain boots and an umbrella just in case you get caught up in a spring shower.

Okinawa is a set of islands towards the south of Japans mainland. Since relatively south, there temperature is relatively warmer than the rest of the country. The average high temperature for May is 27°C while the average low temperature is 22°C so you can break out your summer wear and take in the sun. Feel free to wear your shorts and sandals in the day but bring a light jacket for the evenings.
