Hokkaido

Hokkaido

Average High: 16°C (60.8°F) Average Low: 11°C (51.8°F)

With its largest dwelling being Sapporo, Hokkaido is the northern most territory of Japan. Although it gets really cold out there in the winters, in the summer, especially June, the weather is good enough to get out and have some fun. The cool summers are a welcome contrast from the harsh heat and humidity of the Honshu region. This means daytime highs are comfortable enough for a comfy sweater and some jean pants but beware as it will get cold in the evenings so make sure to take a jacket just in case.

Tohoku

Tohoku

Average High: 22°C (71.6°F) Average Low: 11°C (51.8°F)

Tohoku is one of the lesser populated areas of the country and if you want to visit the hilly countryside and enjoy some time alone, Tohoku could be the place to be! Be careful as it can get cold due to the effects of a cold phenomenon called the Siberian High. It is one of the cooler places in Honshu so make sure to dress with a light sweater. Like stated before, make sure to be careful of the cold nights in Tohoku. Do yourself a favor and bring a jacket as just to be on the safe side.

Kanto

Kanto

Average High: 25°C (77°F) Average Low: 11°C (51.8°F)

Kanto is the most populous region of Japan with Tokyo, Hakone and Yokohama to name a few of those populated areas. If you go to the Land of the Rising Sun, you will get to visit this area one way or another therefore knowing the average temperatures before embarking on your journey is wise. June is the month that brings along flashes of summer and the rainy season. Be prepared by taking an umbrella wherever you go because flash floods and heavy downpours are not uncommon this time of year. Wear something light to combat the rising heat and humidity but also be ready for those sudden rain storms.

Kansai

Kansai

Average High: 27°C (80.6°F) Average Low: 19°C (66.2°F)

Kansai is the best place if you want to see old Japan and all its iconic practices as it is home to Kyoto, which was the capital for several hundred years before moving to Tokyo. Kansai is also more or less the same with a slightly higher average daytime high. Much like the rest of Japan, June is a rainy month in Kansai so be ready to break out that umbrella as you will more than likely experience a shower or two during your stay. It’s best to wear something light in Kansai as well as the heat and humidity will also start to rise. A light T-shirt is definitely recommended here and a light sweater for the evenings. Once again, don’t forget your umbrella!

Kyushu

Kyushu is southernmost of main Japanese territories and is home to famous cities such as Nagasaki and Fukuoka. The temperature is awesome here in June so you will definitely enjoy it! June brings a much needed break from the rains of earlier months so you can rest assured the weather will be perfect for summer wear. A light shirt in the daytime and sweater for the evenings is great for staying comfortable in Kyushu in June.

Okinawa

Okinawa

Average High 29°C (84.2°F) Average Low: 24°C (75.2°F)

Okinawa is in the southern most region of Japan and consists of many islands. It is easily the hottest region of Japan and presents quite a contrast from rest of Japan, especially Hokkaido. It is also home to the largest US military base in Japan. If you want to enjoy tropical weather, Okinawa is the place for you as it is definitely warm enough to dress light but once again the rains are definitely going to be coming down around this time of year. A T-shirt and shorts are highly appropriate for the region but you better have your umbrella in handy.
