Kappabashi is an area in Tokyo known for cooking equipment, it is the go-to area for local chefs. Located between Asakusa and Ueno, its a short but so worth the walk to this special shop.
We visited the Ganso Shokuhin Sample Showroom, all of the items are for sale but none of them are edible. Many Japanese restaurants use food samples or fake food to show customers what is on the menu. The fake food displayed out from of restaurants tends to bring people in.
Ganso Shokuhin Samples are used a so many restaurants and cafes in Japan. At this shop you can touch and buy these food samples. There make great souvenirs for food lovers.
When looking at these food samples, they are so well-made you can’t tell if its real or fake. The soba noodles and grains of rice are so well detailed, it looks the real thing.
There is a display explain how all of the fake food is made. The craftsmen look at the real item first, then create silicone molds for each item.
The keychains and light switch covers look so real, you might be hungry all day. Having a fake food keychain might really surprise some people because it looks so real.
There is magnets, pen holders, and other food themed office supplies. These might be a good gift for someone who just got a job.
There are kits so that you can make your own fake food. With some of the kits, you can make pizza or pasta. At the Kappabashi store, with reservations guests can make their own fake food with the help of a professional. The basic items all students make are tempura and lettuce. All of the lectures are in Japanese only, so for those who do not understand Japanese, you might want to bring a translator.
