Takoyaki is an extremely popular food from Osaka, Bakudan Yaki takes takoyaki to the extreme. Throughout Japan, there are many Bakudan Yaki shops and this time we visited the Ikebukuro shop near the east exit. We went around 3PM on a weekday, surprisingly there were people lined up, if people are lined up you know its popular.
Bakudan Yaki is eight times larger than the average takoyaki. Bakudan Yaki is a little different from takoyaki because there is more ingredients inside rather than just octopus. The shop has food samples of the different kinds to choose from, just by looking at the samples it should give you an idea of how big they are. Some of the flavors to choose from is cheese, kimchi, and Pollock roe.
When you peak into the shop, you can see the Bakudan Yaki being made. Of course they are using a normal takoyaki pan, but it’s eight times bigger than usual.
This time we ordered the original Bakudan Yaki, it was topped with mayonnaise, takoyaki sauce, and bonito flakes. Since one Bakudan Yaki is eight takoyaki combine, one person only needs one of these. Off to the side of the shop, there is a sitting space so you can enjoy your Bakudan Yaki there. The outside was crunchy while the inside was fluffy. It had a good balance of textures. There was plenty of filling like vegetables and octopus.
There is many things to do around Ikebukuro such as the Sunshine City Aquarium and many places to shop. If you are looking for any manga or anime goods, the flagship Animate store is waiting for you. Next time you are in Ikebukuro, why not try a Bakudan Yaki?
