Hidden within the Nara Prefecture in the city of Yamatokoriyama, in front of the popular K Coffee cafe sits a phone booth, but it’s not an ordinary phone booth. This phone booth has been attracting quite a bit of attention because its filled with live gold fish. The “kingyo no denwa bokkusu” as its called, is definitely a unique take on recycling something that has otherwise become obsolete.

Its actually not very unexpected to see something of this sort in Yamatokoriyama as it has been dubbed the “Goldfish Town”. Yamatokoriyama is famous for it’s abundance of Goldfish and Koi farms which is the largest of its kind in Japan. Made as part of an art event by the Kingyobu (Goldfish Club) based out of Kyoto, the goldfish phone booth caught such interest from K Coffee and the locals that they decided to keep it as a mainstay in front of K Coffee. This ads to the already unique atmosphere of K Coffee.

K Coffee is well known for offering up some of its delicious original roast coffees, crepes, and Japanese shaved ice. Visitors can purchase a variety of original K Coffee creations to take home; such as coffee drip bags that come inside a cute plastic cover which is the same as that of the ones given during kingyosuki, Goldfish scooping.
