5 Cherry Blossom Spots and When to See in Hokkaido 2017

Hokkaido is a great place to visit for sakura in 2017. Be sure to visit Sapporo for an amazing view and stop by Hakodate for a festival or two this cherry blossom season.

Maruyama Park – Sapporo

Best time to see cherry blossoms: From late April to early May

One of the most amazing places to visit in Hokkaido as well as see the cherry blossoms in full bloom is Sapporo city. Sapporo is located on the western end of Hokkaido, near Ishikari Bay. One of the most popular places to see the cherry blossoms in Sapporo is at Maruyama Park. Maruyama Park is home to the Hokkaido Shrine as well as the Maruyama Zoo, the oldest zoo in Hokkaido with over 150 different species to see. During the cherry blossom season many food stalls are open in the park allowing those with an empty stomach a place to get a bite to eat or grab a cool drink.

Hakodate, located on the southern tip of Hokkaido is one of the earliest cities in Japan to be visited by westerners. Hakodate Park is considered one of the oldest western style parks in Japan as well. Hakodate Park is one of the more popular areas in Hakodate to see the cherry blossoms but it is overshadowed by the amazing Fort Goryokaku. Fort Goryokaku was originally a military fort but later made into a large park where visitors can see some of the most beautiful cherry blossoms in Japan.

Nijukken Road – Hidaka


Best time to see cherry blossoms: From early to middle of May

If you make the trip to Hokkaido for the cherry blossom season you should check out Nijukken Road in Shinhidaka. Nijukken Road is a 7 kilometer stretch with over 3,000 cherry blossom trees planted along it. Nijukken Road is an extremely popular place to visit due to the Shizunai Cherry Blossom Festival where nearly 200,000 people come to visit each year. If you come to visit, be sure to make a plan to walk the entirety of the road and see the Ryuunkaku guest house!

Yushun Sakura Road – Urakawa

Yushun Sakura Road is another long stretch of cherry blossoms on our list. With cherry blossoms running along both sides of the road, it is said to create a tunnel view for those who visit. One of the reasons people love visiting Yushun Sakura Road is the amazing night time illumination of the sakura trees and while it only lasts for five days during the season, many people come to take an evening stroll down this long road.

Matsumae Park – Matsumae


Best time to see cherry blossoms: From late April to late May

Matsumae Park, is located near Hakodate on the south side of Hokkaido and it is recommended you check out both spots during your visit if you have a chance. Matsumae Park is one of the most unique places to visit for the cherry blossom season as it located near a classic castle town. Within the park there are around 10,000 cherry blossoms and if you are at Matusmae Park you should check out Matsumae Castle as well.
