Toyoni Lake, located in Hokkaido, is gathering popularity for its special shape. Located 200 meters away from a parking area, the lake showcases clear waters and abundant fish perfect for a fishing excursion. However, the grand view can only be seen from the air: a heart-shaped reflection of blue sky surrounded by leafy trees.
Heart-Shaped Toyoni Lake
The lake gained attention when it was featured in a confectionary company’s commercial poster. However, because this view can only be seen from above, this elusive heart-shaped site is nicknamed “phantom lake.”
This lake is a 200 meter walk from the nearest parking area, and we recommend you wear hiking-appropriate footwear (closed toed shoes) to be better prepared for the uneven forest paths.
The forest surrounding Toyoni Lake is serene, and the water itself has a perimeter of 1 kilometer and a depth of 18 meters. The area is filled with natural wildlife both in and around the water.
The best place to see this heart-shaped lake, however, is from above. Last year (2016), the Japanese travel agency JTB offered a tour package that included a helicopter sightseeing excursion over Lake Toyoni. Each helicopter can carry up to four passengers in its compact interior. The flight duration is roughly 8 minutes.
If JTB decides to continue this tour activity in 2017, it will mostly likely happen in September and early October when the weather has stabilized enough to allow safe helicopter flights.
